A rádio 89FM fez uma entrevista com Dexter Holland no dia 20 de outubro de 2004 em São Paulo, Brasil. O material que aprentemente nunca tinha sido compartilhado na internet foi encontrado na coleção antiga de Rafael Varela, e ele decidiu compartilhá-la com seus amigos fãs de Offspring, você pode baixá-la abaixo.

A qualidade do áudio é BEM ruim, então, eu fiz melhor para traduzir/transcrever o áudio. Eu traduzi as perguntas dos autores originais, a maioria dos quais ligou para a rádio ou mandou um email para a mesma. Eles tinham uma tradutora para o Dexter, que na minha opinião, não fez um trabalho muito bom, então, é por isso que eu traduzi as perguntas eu mesmo.

Lucas, São Bernando, Brazil: I’d like to know what you guys expect from the São Paulo concerts and I’d like to know if you guys are going to play a new songs?

Dexter: Oh, we expect it to go crazy, what else would we expect from Brazil, right? Everytime we come here the shows are just amazing, the crowds are insane, lots of energy, and that makes it fun for us, and we are playing, like… I don’t know, five songs off of Splinter, five or six songs.

Bruna Marques, 13, Rio De Janeiro: Is it true that you guys are going to play a Ramones song?

Dexter: Wow, how does this stuff get around? I don’t know, it happens.. You know, in Porto Alegre, we decided it would be fun, in the very last minute, we decided to play a Ramones cover, and you know, it was fun, and I’ll talk to the guys and see if they feel like doing it, and maybe we’ll do it again.

Maíra, São Paulo: Is The Offspring already working on the new album?

Dexter: You know, we actually started recording some new songs, it wasn’t so much for our new album really, but we just wanted to get back in the studio and try some different ideas, so, we’ve actually started recording four or five songs, and hopefully those will end up being part of an album. I would like to get an album out next year, actually.

Dirceu, Santo André: Would you guys like to release a live album?

Dexter: You know, we almost put out a live album a few years ago, and we didn’t because I think it should be special, it shouldn’t just be us playing our songs live, it should feel like an event, you know… like, I don’t know what that is, Kiss live, they had a big drum solo, or whatever that might be and stuff. I didn’t feel like we had that ready at that time, some day I’d like to, but it has to be something special before we put it out.

Maybe something special like The Offspring live in Brazil, I don’t know, something like that, maybe.

Fábio, São Bernando: What about a movie about The Offspring?

Dexter: [laughs] I don’t know, I don’t if we’re that interested as a rock band, because we haven’t OD’d and we haven’t, you know, lost everything, we’re sort of normal guys, I don’t think we’d make a good movie. I think a video game, maybe.

Maurício, Niterói, Rio de Janeiro: How do you see the band’s evolution since the firs album, “The Offspring” was released untill the release of “Splinter” last year? And please, for the love of God, play The Meaning Of Life at the concert this friday, at Claro Hall, because I’ll be there waiting for them to play that song.

Dexter: *Translator tells Dexter that Maurício from Rio has a question* Rio, Hello.

Dexter: [Laughs after the translator mentions Maurício's request for the band to play The Meaning Of Life] Well, we have 7 albums now, of course we’re gonna change, it’s just natural and stuff, you just kinda wanna keep the spirit of what the band is, what The Offspring is live and stuff. So, I think our first album, “The Offspring”, we were still finding ourselves musically, I think from Ignition on, I think you know we sound like, we sound like The Offspring and stuff. And it’s cool to have that thing, kinda core that sounds on songs like this one, “Long Way Home”*, we’re still trying different things on every record, that’s what we’re trying to do.

Bruno, Rio de Janeiro: Is there a special meaning for “Uno dos tres cuatro cinco cinco seis” thing from Pretty Fly (For A White Guy)?

Dexter: No, not really. I Mean, actually, we were doing interviews on the radio in Argentina back from when we were here touring during Ixnay. And she was actually doing like, check, you know, “cheque, cheque, uno, dos, tres, cuatro, cinco, seis” and it kinda like… and it kinda almost sounded like a rhythm that you’d put in a song, and I kinda started thinking about it, “Ah, I should put that in a song”.

Translator: So, you were doing that?

Dexter: Yeah.

Translator: That’s cool.

Raquel, 19, Rio de Janeiro: How are the band members able to spend so much time together without getting sick of each other’s faces? And have you ever thought about quitting because of the fame?

Dexter: Alright, well. Hello, Rachel (The translator told Dexter the girl’s name was Rachel rather than Raquel) [Laughs] [Dexter realises she actually had sent an mail and not called] E-mail? Ah, ok. Ah, well, most people think that when you’re a band, you all live in the same house together. People… kids will sometimes come to my house and say “Where’s Noodles?”, you know, and things like “Oh, he’s upstairs and I’m downstairs”. [Laughter] Of course you’re gonna get — I mean, we’re friends for years, years and years, so, you know, we love each other, but we gotta get away sometime, so, that’s why we go on tour for a while then go back home for a little while, and we can take a break and stuff. We all get along really well, actually. Not really too much of a problem. You know, as far as staying together, as long as it keeps on being fun, people will continue to make records and stuff. I really enjoy it, I feel inspired to make music and stuff, oh, nevermind… That’s not what we’re speaking about here, so… Not just yet.

Radio Presenter: What’s the hardest thing about being in a band? Being in such a famous band like The Offspring, is there anything that he wishes he didn’t have?

Dexter: I guess that it’s a two sided thing, I feel like we’re very fortunate that we can come to a place like Brazil, where people know us. It’s crazy to me to think that, I’m someone who is in Los Angeles, and someone in a different part of the world that speaks a different language would wanna hear our music. I’m really grateful for that. The down side of that is that we do spend a lot of time away from home, away from my family, that can be a drag sometimes.

Tony Harry, 24, Rio Grande do Sul: I’d like to know if you guys are going to go surfin here in Brazil.

[Translator tells Dexter that Tony was at the concert in Porto Alegre] Alright. [Then she tells him that he will be at the concert in that night in São Paulo] Wow… We’re thinking about up in Recife, I guess that’s supposed to be familiar with surf and stuff, we’re thinking about… We have a day of, I think we might go up there, you know, I’m not really a good surfer, but I really enjoy it, Noodles is pretty good, so we might try to get out there. Paddle out, dude.

Carlos Eduardo, 21: I’d like to know that if you guys did all that that is shown in the DVD “Huck It”, like Ron Welty surfing in Hawaii, Greg doing bungee-jumping, Noodles snowboarding, Dexter doing eerobatics.

Dexter: Yeah, it’s real, we made like a whole, like it’s a DVD, but it’s like the kinda stuff we do by ourselves, and we thought it would be fun, entertaining and stuff. Almost like an Extreme Full, but a little bit weird, like, space jumping is a little bit different, so, stuff like that. we just had fun making it, but, yeah, that’s it, that’s the real deal.

[Dexter is asked to choose a song from Splinter to be played]

Dexter: I choose the song, huh? I don’t know, it can be anything? Should it be something punk or what? Or should it be the prison song? Let’s pick (Can’t Get My) Head Around You? How’s that? Is that alright?

Ricardo: I’d like to know if you’ve already learned some words in Portuguese.

Dexter: Obrigado (Thank you). Cerveja (Beer)… Cerveja, Obrigado!

Lucas, São Bernando: Gostaria de saber o que vocês esperam dos shows de São Paulo e se vocês vão tocar alguma coisa nova?

Dexter: Oh, esperamos que seja doido, o que mais espearíamos do Brasil, certo? Toda as vezes que viemos aqui, as platéias são loucas, bastante energia, e isso faz ficar bem divertido pra gente, and vamos tocar, tipo… Não sei, cinco músicas do Splinter, cinco ou seis músicas.

Bruna Marques, 13, Rio De Janeiro: É verdade que vocês vão tocar um cover do Ramones?

Dexter: Uau, como que eles conseguem esse tipo de informação? Eu não sei, acontence… Sabe, em Porto Alegre, nós decidimos que ía ser legal, no último minuto, decidimos tocar um cover de Ramones, e você sabe, foi divertido, e eu vou falar com os rapazes e ver se eles querem tocar, e talvez tocaremos de novo.

Maíra, São Paulo: O The Offspring já está trabalhando no álbum novo?

Dexter: Sabe, acabamos de gravar algumas músicas novas, não foi bem para o nosso novo álbum, mas queríamos voltar ao estúdio e tentar umas idéias novas, então, nós já começamos a gravar quatro ou cinco músicas, e, quem sabe essas músicas acabem sendo parte de algum álbum. Eu gostaria de lançar um álbum novo no ano que vem, na verdade.

Dirceu, Santo André: Vocês gostariam de lançar um álbum ao vivo?

Dexter: Sabe, quase lançamos um álbum de inéditas alguns anos atrás, não lançamos porque eu acho que um álbum assim tem que ser especial, não só nós tocando nossas músicas ao vivo, deve ser algo tipo um evento, sabe… Tipo, eu não sei como é, Kiss ao vivo, eles tinham um grande solo de bateria, ou seja lá o que for. Eu não senti que tínhamos isso no momento, algum dia eu gostaria, mas tem que ser algo especial antes de podermos lançar.

Talvez algo especial como The Offspring ao vivo no Brasil, eu não sei, algo assim, talvez.

Fábio, São Bernando: Que tal um filme sobre The Offspring?

Dexter: [risadas] Eu não sei, eu não sei se estamos interessados como uma banda de roque, porque não tivemos overdose de drogas e nós ainda não, sabe, perdemos tudo, somos meio que caras normais, não acho que faríamos um bom filme. Talvez um jogo de video game.

Maurício, Niterói, Rio de Janeiro: Como você vê a evolução desde o primeiro álbum ‘The Offspring” até o lançamento de “Splinter” no ano passado” E, pelo amor de Deus, toquem The Meaning Of Life nesta sexta feira no Claro Hall porque eu estarei esperando.

Dexter: [Tradutora diz ao Dexter que o Maurício do Rio tem uma pergunta] Rio, Hello.
Dexter: [Ri depois do pedido de Maurício para que toquem The Meaning Of Life] Bem, nós temos 7 álbuns agora, claro que vamos mudar, é só natural e tal, meio que queremos manter o espírito do que a banda é, do que o The Offspring é ao vivo e tudo mais. Então, eu acho que nosso primeiro álbum, “The Offspring”, nós ainda estávamos nos achando musicalmente, eu acho que do Ignition pra frente, eu acho que soamos mais como essa música, “Long Way Home”*, ainda estamos tentando coisas diferentes em cada álbum, é isso que estamos tentando fazer.

Bruno, Rio de Janeiro: Há algum significado espeical para o “Uno dos tres cuatro cinco cinco seis” de Pretty Fly (For A White Guy)?

Dexter: Não, na verdade não. Digo, na verdade, estávamos fazendo entrevistas na rádio na Argentina quando nós estávamos aqui fazendo a turnê do Ixnay. E ela estava fazendo cheque, sabe, cheque, ”cheque, cheque, uno, dos, tres, cuatro, cinco, seis”  e meio que.. e meio que soôu como um rítmo de se colocar em uma música e eu comecei a pensar sobre isso “Ah, eu deveria colocar isso em uma música”.
Tradutora: Então, você estava fazendo isso?
Dexter: Sim.

Raquel, 19, Rio de Janeiro: Como vocês passam tanto tempo junto sem enjoar da cara dos outros? E vocês já pensarem em desistir por causa da fama?

Dexter: Certo, bem. Olá, Rachel. [A tradutora disse ao Dexter que o nome da menina era Rachel ao invés de Raquel] [Risadas] [O Dexter percebe que na verdade ela tinha enviado um e-mail] E-mail? Ah, ok. Bem, a maioria das pessoas pensa que quando você está numa banda, todos vivem numa só casa. As pessoas, a molecada de vez em quando vai lá em casa e diz “Cadê o Noodles?” e você sabe, tipo “Ah, ele tá lá em cima e eu estou aqui em baixo.” [Risadas] Claro que você vai ficar — Digo, somos amos por anos, anos e anos, sabe, nós amamos o outro, mas temos que nos afastar de vez em quando, então, é por isso que vamos em turnê por um tempo, e depois voltamos para casa por um tempo, aí podemos tirar uma folguinha e tudo mais. Nós nos damos muito bem, na verdade. Não é muito um problema. Sabe, e quanto à passar muito tempo com o outro, enquanto for divertido, as pessoas vão continuar a gravar álbums. Eu gosto bastante, e fico inspirado pra escrever músicas e tudo mais, ah, esqueça.. Não estamos falando sobre isso aqui, então… Não por enquanto.

Locutora da Rádio: Qual é a coisa mais difícil de ser parte da banda? Fazer parte de uma banda tão famosa quanto o The Offspring, há alguma coisa que você não queria ter?

Dexter: Eu acho que isso é uma coisa de dois lados, eu sinto que nós somos bem sortudos de podermos vir a lugares como o Brasil, onde as pessoas conhecem a gente. É estranho pra eu pensar que, pessoas em Los Angeles, e pessoas no outro lado do mundo que falam outro idioma escutam nossa música. Sou bem grato por isso. O lado negativo é que de fato passo bastante tempo longe de casa, longe de minha família, e isso pode ser bem incoveniente.

Tony Harry, 24, Rio Grande do Sul: Queria saber se vocês vão surfar aqui no Brasil.

[A tradutora diz ao Dexter que Tony estava no show de Porto Alegre] Certo. [Depois ela diz à ele que ele vai estar no show de São Paulo naquela noite] Uau… Estamos pensando em surfar em Recife, acho que é pra ser uma cidade de surfistas e tudo mais, estamos pensando em… Temos um dia livre, acho que podemos ir lá, sabe, não sou um bom surfista, mas gosto bastante, o Noodles é muito bom, talvez podemos tentar dar uma surfada. Dar uma curtida, cara.

Carlos Eduardo, 21: Gostaria de saber se vocês fizeram tudo aquilo que é mostrado no DVD “Huck It”, como o Ron Welty surfando no Havaí, o Greg fazendo bunge-jumping, o Noodles fazendo snowboard e o Dexter fazendo acrobacias aéreas.

Dexter: É, é verdade, fizemos meio que um fime inteira, é meio que um DVD, mas é meio que coisa que fazemos mesmo, achamos que seria legal e tudo mais. Meio que algo de esportes radicais, mas um pouco estranho, tipo, o bumgee jumping é meio diferente, então, coisas do tipo. Nos divertimos fazendo o DVD, então, é, aquilo tudo é verdade.

[É pedido ao Dexter que ele escolha uma música a ser tocada]

Dexter: Eu escolho a música, né? Não sei, pode ser qualquer coisa? Deve ser algo punk ou o que? Ou a música da prisão? Vamos escolher (Can’t Get My) Head Around You? Que tal? Tudo bem?

Ricardo: Eu gostaria de saber se você já aprendeu algumas palavras em Português.

Dexter: Obrigado . Cerveja … Cerveja, Obrigado!
